Learn Strudel by Beatboxing
Welcome to an interactive tutorial where you'll learn Strudel by recreating beatbox patterns! Instead of starting from abstract concepts, we'll use your ears to guide the learning process.
How This Works
Each exercise follows a simple pattern:
- Listen - Watch a short beatbox video clip
- Identify - Count the beats and recognize the rhythm
- Recreate - Use the embedded Strudel editor to match the pattern
Prerequisites
This tutorial assumes you've completed the Getting Started guide on strudel.cc ↗ . You should be familiar with:
- The basic
s("sound")function - How to play and stop patterns
- Using the Strudel REPL ↗
Beatbox Sounds You'll Learn
These are the five core beatbox sounds used throughout all exercises. Watch each video to hear the sound, then see how it maps to Strudel code.
B - Bass/Kick
Strudel code: bd
The foundation beat - a deep, punchy kick sound
T - Hi-Hat
Strudel code: hh
Sharp, crisp closed hi-hat sound
K - Outward Snare
Strudel code: sd
Classic snare sound made with outward breath
Ts - Open Hi-Hat
Strudel code: oh
Longer, more sustained hi-hat sound
^K - Inward Snare
Strudel code: sd
Different snare texture made with inward breath
